On Monday, the International Olympic Committee awarded the 2026 Winter Games to Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo, which won the Stockholm-Åre bid.
It will be the third time that the winter Olympic event will be held in Italy, after the 1956 editions in Cortina and 2006 in Turin.
Milan will succeed in the list of organizers of Winter Games to Beijing, which will host them in the year 2022.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte led the team that made its final presentation on Monday in Lausanne (Switzerland) to the IOC assembly.
The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, sent a video message.
A young skater born in Lausanne handed the envelope with the name of the winning city to IOC President Thomas Bach, a German, after counting the votes cast by the members of the body in secret.
Thomas Bach immediately went to congratulate the winners and console the losers, especially Gunilla Lindberg, a veteran Swedish IOC member, and Princess Victoria, heir to the Nordic crown.
